Stay FIT this Winter

Don’t let the cold and rainy weather get you down.
Here are some fun and creative ways you can stay FIT this winter.

  1. Take up a winter sport. Snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding, or ice-skating are some popular wintertime sports.
  2. Get creative at home. With just a few pieces of equipment you can turn your home into a gym. Try resistance bands, a stability ball, or small hand weights. If you don’t want to invest in any equipment there are plenty of body weight exercises you can do. Turn on your favorite music or a watch your favorite tv show.
  3. Try a new group fitness class at your gym or local rec center. Yoga, pilates, zumba are some of my favorites. Spinning, aerobics, step, or kickboxing are some other classes that may be offered.
  4. Don’t let the cold scare you. Bundle up and take a walk or go for a run. Layers are a great idea when it’s cold outside. Many of the popular sportswear companies offer specific clothing for cold weather. Make sure to have a stocking hat, gloves, and warm socks on hand.
  5. Try a family activity that will keep you moving such as swimming, bowling, rock climbing. If you don’t want to leave the house play a family game on your Xbox Kinect or Wii.
  6. Walk the mall. Many malls open early for walkers. Some malls even offer classes. Go to your local mall’s website and see what you can find.
  7. Take the stairs. One of our friends recently shared his workout with us. He works in one of the high rise buildings in downtown Portland, which has over 50 floors. After work he puts his workout clothes on and hits the stairs to walk as many flights of stairs as he can.
