Being active isn’t just about working out…

We would all love the time to hit the gym or get a workout in at home each day…okay maybe love isn’t the right word. Bottom line,Runner - running shoes closeup exercise is important! Getting enough exercise in a world of sit down jobs, computers, and i phones can be tricky. Try some of these ideas to get more movement into your busy day.

Walk, walk, and walk…anywhere you can. Heading to the store? Once you have finished your shopping, take one more quick trip around the store and there you go, you’ve added more steps in your day.

A pedometer is a great way to track your steps. Start out by wearing the pedometer every day for a week. Put it on first thing in the morning and wear it until you go to bed. You now know your average daily steps, record your daily steps in a journal. The guidelines for steps per day is 10,000, which is about 5 miles for the average person. Try increasing your steps each week by 500 steps until you reach your goal of 10,000.

Park further away when you head to the store.

Turn on your favorite song and dance around your house for the entire song. I do this while I’m cleaning my house. I take dance breaks in between jobs.

Hit the trails. Hiking can be a great way to add a lot of steps.

Hop on your bike. You can cover a lot of ground and see the beautiful scenery.

While watching TV grabs some light weights and get some reps done during the commercials. Each time a commercial comes on start your exercise (biceps curl, triceps extension, push-ups) when the commercial is over you’re done with that set.

Clean your house. Scrubbing, dusting, mopping burns a lot of calories.

Exercise while you’re running your errands. Put on your walking shoes and make it a point to park far, skip the drive through windows, and take the stairs when you can.

If you are not as active as you would like start by adding a little bit more movement each day until you reach your goal. Make it fun, exercise doesn’t always have to be a chore.
